Compensation for Coconut Trees Damaged by Disaster

COLOMBO (News 1st): An allowance of Rs. 10,000 will be provided for each fruit-bearing coconut tree damaged by the recent disaster.

Chairman of the Coconut Cultivation Board, Dr. Sunimal Jayakody, said that information on the damage to coconut cultivation has already been collected.

He stated that affected farmers can submit details through the Coconut Development Officer or the Grama Niladhari Officer in their respective areas.

In addition to the financial assistance, free coconut saplings will be provided to replace damaged trees.

Dr. Jayakody added, that an allowance of Rs. 4,000 will also be granted for each damaged coconut sapling. 

He noted that around one percent of plantations under the Coconut Cultivation Board have been affected by the disaster.

The Kegalle Regional Management Office of the Coconut Cultivation Board has been completely destroyed, while several other regional offices have also sustained damage.
