COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Navy has mounted extensive rescue and relief operations in the wake of a catastrophic breach of the Mavil Aru tank embankment on November 30, following relentless heavy rainfall.
The sudden collapse unleashed torrents of water across the Muthur region, leaving hundreds stranded and triggering a full-scale humanitarian response.
As of this morning, 309 residents have been safely evacuated by naval teams and relocated to Galkanda Viharaya in Muthur, which now serves as a temporary shelter for displaced families.
Navy personnel worked through the night, navigating submerged roads and strong currents to reach marooned communities.
To bolster operations, the Navy has deployed a landing craft and an inshore patrol craft off the Muthur coast, ensuring rapid mobility and readiness for further evacuations.
These assets remain on standby as floodwaters continue to threaten low-lying areas.
Officials confirm that relief efforts are ongoing, with priority given to vulnerable groups.
