COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police have arrested the prime suspect in the brutal killing of Ambalangoda Modara Devalaya Committee Chairman, Mirantha Varushavithana, in a dramatic operation in Sellakataragama.

The suspect has been identified as Mahadura Isuru, believed to be a key figure in the attack.

Varushavithana was gunned down on November 4 in broad daylight near the Ambalangoda Municipal Council and Public Library, while riding a motorcycle.

According to police, the assailant approached in a car and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Investigators revealed that the victim was a relative of Karandeniya Sudda, a member of an organized crime syndicate currently hiding overseas. The killing is suspected to be linked to underworld rivalries.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the attack was meticulously planned.

The gunman initially attempted to shoot when the victim turned onto the Municipal Council Road, but a passing three-wheeler blocked the car’s path.

Moments later, the assailant struck near the Public Library, firing multiple rounds before escaping.

Police teams continue to hunt for other accomplices as the investigation unfolds.
