COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Customs has taken five containers of rice imported from India into custody following a tip-off regarding an alleged tax evasion attempt.
Customs Spokesperson Chandana Punchihewa confirmed that investigations are underway after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) formally notified Customs on November 13 about the suspected fraud.
The containers, which had been held at Colombo Port for nearly three months, reportedly contain 130,000 kilograms of Ponni Samba rice.
Authorities suspect the consignment was intended to bypass tax regulations.
