Irrigation Department Warns of Possible Flooding as Heavy Rain Continues

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Department of Irrigation urges the residents in areas along the Kalu ganga, Kelani ganga, Gin ganga and Attanagalu Oya to remain vigilant due to the prevailing heavy rainfall conditions.

Director of Hydrology and Disaster Management L. S. Suriya Bandara stated that several low-lying areas have already become inundated as a result of the continuing rain.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology says that intermittent showers or thundershowers can be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, Northern and North-Central provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara and Trincomalee districts.

According to the department, the rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in some of these areas.

Fishermen and naval activities in shallow sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee via Muttur, and from Galle to Hambantota via Pottuvil are advised to remain cautious, according to the Meteorology Department.
