Kelaniya Police Bust Rs. 20M Cash Robbery Plot in Pettah

COLOMBO (News 1st); A daring robbery involving over Rs. 20 million belonging to a private institution in Pettah has been uncovered, with eight suspects, including a woman, now in custody. 

The crime was allegedly orchestrated while an employee was transporting the cash to a bank.

The breakthrough came when officers from the Kelaniya Division Crime Prevention Unit stopped a suspicious three-wheeler in Narammineya, Peliyagoda. 

A bag containing Rs. 3 million was found in the possession of a passenger, leading to the arrest of both the individual and the driver.

Further questioning revealed details of the planned heist, resulting in the arrest of a female suspect with Rs. 1.5 million, and five more suspects with Rs. 22.45 million in cash. 

The suspects, aged between 25 and 45 years, include residents of Kelaniya, Peliyagoda, Wellampitiya, Mawanella, and Kadawatha. 

The woman is reported to be 60 years old.

Investigations under the Kelaniya Crime Prevention Unit are ongoing.
