COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning of heavy rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters in several provinces today, including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western, and Southern regions.
This weather pattern is attributed to a low-pressure area currently developing near the island, which is expected to intensify further and move towards India.
Due to the prevailing conditions, the Met Department has advised fishermen operating in deep-sea areas to exercise extreme caution.
Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation reports that water levels in several major rivers—including the Kalu, Nilwala, and Kelani—are rising significantly due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
Director of the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division, L.S. Suriyabandara, has urged residents living along riverbanks to remain vigilant.
In addition, 15 major reservoirs, including Rajanganaya, Kala Wewa, Tabbowa, and Deduru Oya, are currently spilling.
The department also confirmed that five medium-scale reservoirs have reached spill levels as well.
