COLOMBO (News 1st) — Eight individuals, including the wife of a former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), have been remanded until October 1st in connection with an alleged treasure hunting operation in the Timbirigaskadawala area of Shravastipura, Anuradhapura.
The suspects were arrested while allegedly attempting to excavate and retrieve ancient artifacts from a temple site.
They were produced before Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya, who ordered their continued remand.
Another person who was remanded is DIG Uditha Liyanage, who was also taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
He was presented before the same magistrate yesterday (25) and has also been remanded until October 1st.
The CID is conducting further investigations under the directive of the Inspector General of Police.
