COLOMBO (News 1st); Two police officers attached to the Bambalapitiya Police Station—a sergeant and a constable—have been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs. 30,000 from a Singaporean national.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on the night of August 19 during a mobile patrol. The officers reportedly found several illegal cigarettes in the possession of the foreign national. Instead of initiating legal action, they allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 40,000.
The officers are accused of taking the Singaporean’s bank card and withdrawing Rs. 30,000 from a nearby ATM.
Following the incident, the foreign national lodged a complaint with the Tourist Police, prompting an internal investigation. The Bambalapitiya Police arrested the two officers based on preliminary findings.
Authorities have also identified a third officer—a police constable—believed to be involved in the incident. He is currently evading arrest, according to police.
Investigations are ongoing.
