Man Arrested for Helping Shooting Suspect Escape

COLOMBO (News 1st); Police have arrested a resident of Middeniya for allegedly assisting a suspect to evade custody after escaping from the Ratnapura Police Station.

The suspect in question had been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on July 29 in connection with multiple shooting incidents in Panadura, and was later handed over to Ratnapura Police for further investigation. However, he managed to escape while in custody.

Following the escape, the CID launched a formal investigation, and police have now apprehended an individual believed to have helped the suspect remain in hiding.

In response to the incident, two sergeants attached to the Ratnapura Police have been suspended pending further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the escape.

The suspect is reportedly linked to several serious crimes and was believed to be hiding in the Ratnapura area before being taken into custody.
