Sri Lankan Fishermen Remanded In Madagascar Until August 11

Colombo(News 1st); Eight Sri Lankan fishermen arrested by Madagascar security forces have been remanded  until the 11th.

They were arrested on the 2nd of last month for violating maritime boundaries.

The multi-day fishing vessel – Root Baba 06 – with 8 fishermen had departed from Wennappuwa on the 5th of last April.

They say they have been severely affected due to the lack of proper facilities, including food and water.

They have informed the authorities to take immediate steps for their release.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Fisheries says efforts are underway through the Sri Lankan Embassy in Seychelles to secure the release of the 8 Sri Lankan fishermen detained in Madagascar.

Deputy Minister Rathna Gamage stated that the Sri Lankan Embassy in Seychelles has been instructed to send a translator fluent in French and Sinhala to Madagascar to assist with the legal proceedings.
