COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Police Media Division has issued a public warning following a surge in complaints related to unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts and subsequent financial fraud.
According to the statement, fraudsters are using deceptive messages and impersonation tactics to trick users into sharing their One-Time Passwords (OTP). Once obtained, these OTPs allow unauthorized individuals to gain control of victims' WhatsApp accounts and carry out financial scams.
The police emphasize that these incidents are part of a growing trend and urge the public to never share OTPs or verification codes with anyone, regardless of the circumstances. Victims are often unaware that their accounts have been compromised until fraudulent transactions or messages are discovered.
