COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Environment has decided to conduct a fresh study on the country’s elephant corridors, according to Minister Dr. Dhammi‍ka Pathabendi.

He stated that recent data suggests elephant movement routes have changed due to development activities, environmental shifts, and forest degradation.

Minister Pathabendi emphasized the need for a structured study to better understand and manage these altered migration paths.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to remove barriers from four elephant corridors this year.

These corridors are located in the Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura districts.

The Minister noted that work to remove obstructions at the Punani and Hungamalu elephant corridors, situated within the Minneriya Wildlife Zone, is currently in its final stages.
