COLOMBO (News 1st); The inaugural session of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha was abruptly postponed today (27) following a heated dispute and allegations of missing council members, prompting intervention by officials and law enforcement.
The session, held under the leadership of Southern Province Local Government Commissioner Umanga Mendis, was scheduled to begin with the election of a new chairman.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member Lasantha Wickramasekara was nominated for the position by Pushpakumara Battage, representing the Sarva Jana Balaya.
However, proceedings were disrupted when members of the National People's Power (NPP) claimed that two of their councillors, who had left their residences to attend the session, had not arrived and were feared to have been abducted.
The NPP delegation strongly objected to continuing the session in their absence.
As tensions escalated, a group of supporters gathered outside the council premises entered the building, further intensifying the situation.
In response to the unrest, Commissioner Mendis made the decision to postpone the session until further notice.
