COLOMBO (News 1st): The inaugural session of the Colombo Municipal Council is scheduled to be held tomorrow, under the chairmanship of Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara. 

The session is set to begin at 9:30 a.m.

During the session, the Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council is scheduled to be elected.

At the local government elections, the National People's Power (NPP) secured the highest number of seats in the Colombo Municipal Council, winning 48.

However, the party did not obtain an overall majority.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) won 29 seats, while the United National Party (UNP) obtained 13 seats. 

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) secured 5 seats, and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) won 4 seats.

Independent Group 03 won three seats, while Independent Groups 04 and 05 secured two seats each.

The National People's Power has nominated Vraie Cally Balthazaar as its candidate for the post of Mayor.

Meanwhile, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya candidate, Riza Farook, is contesting the mayoral position with the backing of opposition parties.

To gain control of the Colombo Municipal Council, a minimum of 59 out of the 117 seats is required.
