COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management says that more than 2,500 illegal constructions have been identified along the country’s coastal zone.

The department's Director General, Dr. Terney Pradeep Kumara, said that the process of removing these illegal structures has already commenced.

According to the law, no construction is permitted within a zone ranging from 10 to 25 meters from the shoreline.

However, he noted that various parties have ignored this regulation in recent times, leading to serious impacts on the coastal environment.
