COLOMBO (News 1st); Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa emphasised the urgent need to strengthen the connection between education, healthcare, and the labour market, noting that the current relationship among these sectors is not as healthy or coordinated as it should be.

Speaking on the matter, Dr. Jayatissa said, “As a country, we are facing a serious challenge. There is a disconnect between our education system, the healthcare sector, and the job market. When these systems are not aligned, it creates friction even among the best institutions.”

He revealed that a high-level discussion was held with the participation of the Prime Minister, who also serves as the Minister of Education and Higher Education, along with all deans of medical faculties across the country. The focus was on how Sri Lanka can produce the medical professionals needed for the public sector, while also preparing qualified individuals for international employment opportunities.

“This is a timely opportunity,” he said. “We are now planning to expand these discussions to other sectors in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.”

Dr. Jayatissa stressed the importance of accountability in public investment in higher education. “When we produce a graduate using public funds, the government has a responsibility to ensure that graduate’s future is secure—whether they serve in the public sector, the private sector, or even abroad. Regardless of where they go, the Sri Lankan state remains responsible for them.”
