COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (SLHRC) has revealed that 49 individuals have died while in police custody between 2020 and May 2025.

This alarming statistic was disclosed by SLHRC Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa, who emphasized the urgent need for systemic reform and accountability within law enforcement.

Punchihewa further noted that an additional 30 deaths occurred during police confrontations, bringing the total number of fatalities linked to police operations to 79 over the past five years.

“These figures are deeply concerning,” Punchihewa stated. “The police are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining law and order. When that responsibility is not fulfilled in a lawful and transparent manner, public trust in the police erodes significantly.”

He warned that the erosion of public confidence in law enforcement could have far-reaching consequences for society, including a reluctance among citizens to share critical information that could aid criminal investigations. “If people fear that suspects will be harmed or killed after being taken into custody, they will hesitate to come forward with information,” he added.

Punchihewa stressed the importance of transparency and adherence to due process in police operations. He argued that a structured and accountable approach not only protects human lives but also enhances the professionalism and credibility of the police force, both nationally and internationally.

The Human Rights Commission is currently preparing a set of guidelines aimed at preventing deaths in custody and during police confrontations. These guidelines are expected to promote lawful procedures and reinforce public trust in law enforcement institutions.
