COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Health has issued a public advisory to prevent accidents during the festive season.
Dr. Samitha Sirithunga, a community health specialist from the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit, stated that every year, between 75 and 100 individuals lose their lives due to accidents during the New Year week.
In light of this, the authorities have shared several important messages for those celebrating the New Year:
The festive season often brings unpleasant memories of increased road accidents and emergencies. This reminder is issued because your life is valuable to us.
When traveling long distances to visit friends and family during the New Year, please exercise caution. Under no circumstances should you drive under the influence of alcohol. Not driving under the influence is your responsibility as a driver, and rejecting drunk driving is everyone's responsibility.
We urge you not to drive at excessive speeds. Be extremely cautious when swimming near reservoirs. Follow safety measures when lighting fireworks. Ensure that adults supervise children using fireworks.
Please be mindful of these precautions. Do not let the joy of the New Year slip away from you.
