COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Ministry of Health has advised the public to take precautionary measures to prevent accidents during the festive season.

Community Medicine Specialist from the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit, Samitha Siritunga, said that between 75 and 100 people lose their lives in accidents each year during the New Year week.

He noted that the season often brings a rise in road accidents and sudden deaths, leaving behind bitter memories for many.

The Ministry urges the public to exercise caution when traveling long distances and to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol. Drivers are reminded that it is their responsibility not to drive while intoxicated, and that others should also refuse to travel with a drunk driver.

The public is also advised to avoid speeding, be cautious when bathing in rivers and lakes, and follow safety guidelines when using fireworks. Parents and guardians are urged to supervise children when handling fireworks.

The Ministry emphasized that safety should be a priority to ensure a joyful and incident-free New Year.
