Extra Buses, Trains for New Year; 35,000 Cops On Duty

COLOMBO (News 1st) - In celebration of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, special transport services are being implemented today. 

According to T.H.R.T. Chandrasiri, Deputy General Manager of the Sri Lanka Transport Board, additional buses have been scheduled to meet passenger demand.

Sri Lanka Railways is also operating special train services for the New Year. 

Extra train journeys are available to Badulla, Beliatta, Anuradhapura, Galle, and Kankesanthurai. 

Additionally, the number of carriages on the Yal Devi and Rajarata Rejina trains has been increased.

In anticipation of the New Year festivities, Sri Lanka Police implemented special security and traffic arrangements in areas where large crowds are expected to gather. 

These measures are in place for festivals, musical shows, and other celebrations.

The police have deployed 6,000 officers in areas such as Colombo Fort, Pettah, Borella, Kirulapone, and Bambalapitiya, as well as around religious sites, to ensure public safety. 

Overall, more than 35,000 police officers have been assigned to manage security and traffic during the festive period.
