COLOMBO (News 1st); Police opened fire on a car that was fleeing despite orders to stop in Kotahena last night.

It was later revealed that the car had been stolen by a suspect.

At about 10:30 PM last night, a man stole a car with two women inside in Wasala Road, Kotahena.

A pregnant woman and her mother were inside the car at the time.

The woman's husband had stopped the car and gone into a restaurant on Kotahena Street to buy food.

During this time, a suspect broke into the car and drove off, taking the two women along with it.

The husband immediately contacted the police to report the theft of the car and his family members.

A team of officers from the Mattakkuliya Police Station began pursuing the vehicle.

Despite police signals to stop, the suspect continued fleeing, prompting officers to fire two shots at the car in an attempt to bring it to a halt.

The suspect eventually abandoned the car near the Bluemendal railway crossing in the Kotahena police division and fled on foot.

Fortunately, neither of the women inside the car was injured during the incident.

The suspect has not yet been arrested.
