COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister of Fisheries, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, has declared that those responsible for the crimes committed at the Batalanda torture chamber will face justice.
This statement was made in response to comments by UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena, who remarked that killing in self-defense is not a crime.
"If a government elected by the people is attacked, the government will control it. That is not considered murder. This is not my statement; it is stated in the constitution. For example, if someone's life is in danger and they defend themselves, it is not considered murder. If someone attacks you and you defend yourself, resulting in their death, it is not murder. This is called self-defense." said Vajira Abeywardena, the Chairman of the United National Party on Wednesday (2).
Minister of Fisheries Ramalingam Chandrasekar launched a scathing critique against the United National Party (UNP) leadership, specifically on its chairman, Vajira Abeywardena, and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Chandrasekar accused Wickremesinghe of being responsible for the atrocities committed during the 1987-1989 period, alleging that he was involved in the deaths of thousands of young people.
He further claimed that Wickremesinghe's actions led to the deaths of over 60,000 young men and women during that period.
The Minister emphasized the pain and suffering experienced by the families of the victims, stating, "These were our own people, and we feel their pain deeply. We understand their suffering."
He warned that if the law is properly enforced, several UNP members might face imprisonment, including Wickremesinghe himself.
