COLOMBO (News 1st); The Indian Ocean region is a crucial nexus for global trade routes and security dynamics, said Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Defence at the opening of the Colombo Air Symposium 2025.

Major General Jayasekara pointed out that the Indian Ocean Rim connects Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East, serving as a strategic bridge. He noted that the region's strategic locations, rich in marine resources, have yet to be fully exploited.

"All of you are aware about what Admiral Thayer Mahan said, two to three hundred years ago. He said that whoever who has the command over this Indian Ocean region may have the strategic leverage of commanding or controlling the entire world or the managing economies of the world, which I do consider is happening today," he said citing Admiral Thayer Mahan's historical assertion that control over the Indian Ocean region could provide strategic leverage in managing global economies.

The Indian Ocean region is vital for global governance and faces diverse security challenges, including organized crime, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and natural or man-made disasters.

Major General Jayasekara referenced past incidents such as the MV Express Pearland MT New Diamond disasters, highlighting the coordinated efforts of the Air Force, Navy, Army, and coastal institutions in addressing these challenges.

As a responsible government, Major General Jayasekara emphasized the importance of balanced diplomacy and strategic cooperation with regional forces and countries. He stressed the need to share the benefits of strategic locations and enhance partnerships to bolster regional stability and maritime security.
