COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Science and Technology has announced the development of a new elephant fence system by engineers at the National Engineering and Development Center, adhering to international standards. This innovative fence offers several special features.
According to the ministry, the system can notify the owner via text message if any damage or breach occurs.
Additionally, a dedicated web page has been created for monitoring and analyzing reports related to the fence, ensuring minimal risk of attacks by wild elephants.
As a pilot project, this elephant fence system has been installed at the Weerawila Open Camp. The project was handed over to the Department of Prisons by the Minister of Science and Technology, Krishantha Abesekara, and the Minister of Environment, Dhammika Patabendi.
The fence spans 3.8 kilometers and stands 16 feet tall.
