COLOMBO (News 1st): President Anura Kumara Dissanayake underscored the critical importance of granting independence to relevant institutions to effectively combat corruption and fraud.
Speaking at an event in Kekirawa, the President highlighted that these institutions have been empowered to perform their duties without interference.
"When conducting investigations, if we encounter a situation, we consult the Attorney General's Department for guidance on the next steps. They provide instructions, and sometimes we need to take statements," President Dissanayake explained.
He noted that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) acted on such instructions recently, emphasizing that the goal is not merely to remand individuals but to ensure proper prosecution and justice.
Addressing concerns about the focus on minor cases, the President stated, "There is no distinction between minor and major theft. Theft is theft. Quick investigations yield quick results, while more complex cases take longer. We have strengthened the CID, and they are not targeting anyone specifically. We are committed to addressing all crimes equally."
President Dissanayake also mentioned the establishment of operational institutions to continue this work, with an increase in pace expected by the end of the month.
He stressed that the government does not differentiate between types of corruption, whether it involves fertilizer scams or the Central Bank scam, and that evidence is gathered and processed accordingly.
Highlighting recent actions, the President referred to the arrest of former minister Anura Yapa and his personal secretary, who was also the wife of the former minister, clarifying that accountability extends to all involved in wrongdoing.
He also recounted a case from October 2015, where the Attorney General's Department recently instructed the arrest and questioning of a suspect nearly ten years later, demonstrating the government's commitment to justice.
President Dissanayake emphasized that the current government, led by the National People's Power (NPP), is distinct from past administrations formed through dynastic power or conspiracies. "This government was built by the people, from all walks of life, who came together to create a government that truly represents them," he said. He assured that the government is committed to the people and has already initiated significant changes within two months of taking office.
The President concluded by announcing that the new budget, to be presented on February 17, will outline the direction for the country's development, reinforcing the government's dedication to a corruption-free administration and justice for all.
