Compensation To Be Paid To Victims of Matara Prison Incident

COLOMBO (News 1st); Steps have been taken to provide compensation to the victims of the Matara Prison who died after a branch of a tree collapsed onto the Matara Prison.

Prisons Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake, stated that the government has decided to pay Rs.250,000 for each inmate who died in the incident.

He added that the other inmates who were injured and admitted to the Matara Hospital have returned to the prison following their treatment.

On the night of January 1st, Two inmates at Matara Prison tragically died after a branch of a tree collapsed onto the Matara Prison. Ten other inmates were injured and admitted to the Matara Hospital.

According to Prisons Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake, two buildings in the prison were damaged as a result of the incident.

Accordingly, refurbishment on one building has been completed, while refurbishment on the other building is expected to be completed in the near future.

Steps have also been taken to transfer 55 inmates to the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
