COLOMBO (News 1st); In what was meant to be a day of excitement for motor racing enthusiasts, a tragic incident unfolded on Sunday (21) in Sri Lanka's Diyathalawa region, resulting in the loss of seven lives, including that of a child.

The unfortunate event occurred during the Fox Hill Supercross Motorsport event held in Diyathalawa, a former garrison town nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka's Badulla District, within the Uva Province.

The Event: Fox Hill Supercross is an annual motorsport extravaganza organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy, attracting both local and international racing drivers and riders of top rank.

The Location: Diyathalawa, renowned for its picturesque landscapes, served as the backdrop for the adrenaline-fueled event.

The Incident: Eyewitness accounts reveal that during one of the car races in the afternoon session, a vehicle bearing the number '71' overturned, prompting race marshals to signal a caution with yellow flags. Tragically, amidst this commotion, another car veered off the track, careening into a group of spectators.

While initial reports suggested involvement of cars numbered '5' and '196', authorities are yet to officially confirm these details.

Casualties: Sri Lanka Police have confirmed the grim toll, reporting the loss of a young girl and six adults, all succumbing to injuries sustained in the horrifying accident. Additionally, 21 others suffered injuries in the crash.

Driver Status: The condition of the drivers involved remains unconfirmed by Sri Lankan authorities. However, footage from the scene depicted visibly shaken drivers receiving medical attention from paramedics.
