COLOMBO (News 1st) - Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe said that nearly 8,000 metric tons of imported rice have been released into the market.
The rice, that had been imported through open tenders was distributed to meet market demand.
The Minister assured that all departments have been instructed to conduct thorough inspections of the imported rice stocks.
He also revealed that substandard rice was found in three out of 75 containers imported by a particular supplier.
These stocks will be sent back.
Additionally, Minister Samarasinghe announced that rice will be imported through Lak Sathosa and Sri Lanka State Trading Corporation after December 20.
