COLOMBO (News 1st) -
Ashoka Ranwala has stepped down from his position as Speaker of Parliament.

In a statement, Ashoka Ranwala explained that his decision to resign from his position as Speaker of Parliament was prompted by recent concerns raised regarding his educational qualifications.

He emphasized that he has never made any false claims about his academic background.

However, he noted that some documents necessary to verify his qualifications are currently not in his possession, making it challenging to retrieve and present them from the relevant institutions.

Ranwala added that he can obtain the required documents through the research institution affiliated with Waseda University in Japan, where he earned his doctorate. He intends to provide these documents as soon as possible.

Given the circumstances, and to avoid causing any further inconvenience to the government and the public, Ranwala said that he felt it was best to step down from his role as Speaker.
