COLOMBO (News 1st) - After the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet of Ministers, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressed the newly appointed members, outlining both the opportunities and responsibilities they now carry.
President Dissanayake acknowledged that while the Cabinet and many members of Parliament are new, the political landscape remains familiar. He highlighted the extensive experience many of the ministers bring to the table, having worked together on various political and professional fronts for an extended period.
“This is not only a new Cabinet; many of you are also new to Parliament,” the President said. “However, we have worked together towards a common goal in different capacities. Some of you have contributed as professionals, while others have worked as political activists. So, while this Cabinet and Parliament may be new, the realm of politics remains the same. The work remains unchanged.”
He further expressed confidence that the new Cabinet has the potential to bring fresh ideas and exemplary models that will ultimately benefit the people of Sri Lanka. “You possess both the capability and the determination to fulfill your responsibilities effectively. We know you to be dedicated, honest, and committed to carrying out your duties with courage and integrity,” President Dissanayake added.
The President also reflected on the journey that led them to power, recalling how their efforts were initially driven by a shared vision and noble goals aimed at building the nation. He emphasized that while securing power was a necessary step, true success will be measured by how effectively the Cabinet can implement their political ideals and deliver tangible results.
President Dissanayake reminded the ministers that with victory comes a heavy responsibility, and it is now their duty to ensure that their promises are fulfilled. “The burden of responsibility now falls on you. Your ability to meet the expectations of the people and lead with ethical leadership will determine whether we continue on this path of success,” he stated.
The President also addressed the critical responsibilities of the Cabinet to both the public and the business community. He underscored the importance of exercising power with care and accountability, emphasizing that power is not limitless and must be used responsibly.
"Power generates power, but it must always be exercised within limits,” the President explained. “We must recognize the boundaries of our power and ensure that it is used for the benefit of the people and the business community, while maintaining fairness and justice.”
He urged the ministers to remember that their power is not without constraints, and with it comes significant responsibility. "You must always remember that this power comes with boundaries and responsibilities. We trust that you will uphold this power wisely, for the greater good of the nation and its people.”
