Man and Wife Arrested for 1.8 Billion Rupee Defraud

COLOMBO (News 1st):

A man and his wife who were arrested early this morning at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport as they attempted to flee the country, have been remanded until the 22nd of November.

The suspects are Dhammika Kumara Ranasinghe who is 52 years old and Samudra Surangi Premachandra who is 42 years old.

They were presented before Colombo Chief Magistrate Thilina Gamage today.

The couple had been in hiding in Malaysia for several years after defrauding over 1.8 billion rupees through a pyramid scheme.

According to the Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the CID, investigations had revealed that they had duped a significant number of people through a financial institution operating in Kurunegala, which was designed as a pyramid scheme.

The police have confirmed that statements from 68 individuals have substantiated the claims, further confirming that the suspects defrauded numerous depositors.

Authorities are continuing their investigations as the couple faces serious charges related to financial fraud.
