COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Minister Johnston Fernando, who was in remand custody, has been released on bail.

He was released on five sureties amounting to Rs. 5 million each .

The order was issued today by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali.

The case against Fernando, which includes charges of using an assembled and unregistered BMW vehicle among other allegations, was brought before the Fort Magistrate's Court today.

Magistrate Lakmali instructed Fernando to appear before the High Court as per the warrants issued by the High Court.

During the hearing, Fernando, along with two drivers who were arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail yesterday, appeared in court.

President's Counsel Sampath Mendis, representing Fernando, argued that the charges against his client fall under the Motor Traffic Act, which allows for bail.

He requested the court to release Fernando on any bail conditions deemed appropriate.

Detectives requested the court to deny bail, citing ongoing investigations.

However, the magistrate rejected this request and ordered Fernando's release on bail.

The case is scheduled to be called again on February 5.
