COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance has questioned whether the recent security alert was this some kind of cruel joke being played on Sri Lanka and its vital tourism industry, crucial to economic recovery, by a group of foreign embassies.

Malik Fernando, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance in a statement pointed out Sri Lanka’s tourism industry faces new challenges as recent travel advisories from the United States and the United Kingdom raise concerns about potential threats in the popular tourist destination of Arugam Bay, casting a shadow on an otherwise promising winter tourism season vital to the nation's economic recovery.

He said that the timing and language of these advisories, viewed by many as overly broad, have sparked concerns within Sri Lanka's tourism sector, with some questioning the impact of blanket advisories on destinations heavily dependent on international tourism.

Malik J. Fernando, Chair of the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance, criticized the "uncalibrated response" of foreign embassies, describing the advisories as disproportionate to the actual situation.

"The uncalibrated response from foreign embassies displays callousness towards Sri Lanka and its tourism sector, which plays a critical role in uplifting millions in rural communities still recovering from recent serious economic setbacks," he said.

“While risks are being widely publicized, diplomats privately express comfort with the measures taken by Sri Lankan authorities regarding the alert about Israeli travelers,” Fernando stated, urging a more balanced approach to foreign advisories.

He emphasized the importance of addressing illegal businesses and visa violations while reiterating Sri Lanka’s commitment to welcoming visitors from all backgrounds.

"If we have been over-hospitable in the past,this should be addressed, and laws enforced to ensure the country and its people are not taken advantage of," he said.
