COLOMBO (News 1st): Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath said that swift action was taken by the government in response to potential threats in tourist areas, particularly Arugam Bay.

Minister Herath emphasized that National Security Council (NSC), held multiple meetings for almost a month, to address security concerns. During the initial meetings, critical information regarding potential threats was disclosed, prompting immediate action.

"Upon receiving the information, special police protection was deployed to Arugam Bay and other tourist areas," stated Minister Herath. He highlighted that police protection has been in place since the beginning of the month, with intelligence services conducting thorough investigations.

As a result of these investigations, three individuals were arrested and are currently being interrogated to determine their connections to any plans of unrest. Further investigations will be conducted based on the information extracted from these interrogations.

By Tuesday afternoon, more intelligence was also received. By midnight, the President, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Prime Minister, and other key officials held discussions with detectives to strengthen security measures. Special teams were deployed, roadblocks were set up, and searches were conducted.

The NSC convened again at 7 AM yesterday (23) with the President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Public Security. The council reached several decisions, involving the three armed forces in the security operation.

Minister Herath noted that Israeli tourists also visit Sri Lanka, and given the recent issues in the Middle East, there were concerns about gatherings being targeted. "We acted on the intelligence and took all necessary security measures," he assured.

Tourists can move about freely without any issues, and there is no threat to locals, he said.

Diplomatic talks were held with the US Ambassador and other diplomats, exchanging communications to ensure coordinated efforts.

Minister Herath explained that the public was not informed of the prior intelligence to avoid unnecessary panic, as the information needed to be verified and credible. Necessary security measures were put in place without alarming the public.

Arrests were made before Wednesday, and the government, police, and security forces have taken all necessary measures to protect tourists. Hotels have been instructed to continue with their usual security measures, and the public is urged not to panic.

"We urge not to use these situations for political mileage. We have taken all necessary measures. Do not be misled by rumors that could lead to issues," Minister Herath stated.

He assured that the situation would return to normal in a few days, and travel advisories would soon be lifted by the respective countries.
