The Election Commission announced that any voter suffering with a disability maybe accompanied by another person to cast their vote at the upcoming general election, anyone below the age of 18 or a candidate at the General Election cannot accompany any dissabled voters during the general elction.
In order for a disabled voter to receive assistance while voting he or she must first submit a fitness certificate to the officials at the polling station, applications to obtain this fitness certificate can be obtained from the office of the election commission, divisional secretariat, and the Grama Niladhari office, the application can also be downloaded through www.elections.gov.lk
The Commission also informs that voters with physical disabilities can apply for transportation assistance to and from the polling station. Applications can be submitted to the office of the election commission, the divisional secretariat, the Grama Niladhari office, and through the website.
To facilitate the process, the Election Commission recommends that voters provide a medical certificate from a registered doctor confirming their inability to travel on foot or via public transport.
