Minor Flood Levels Reported in Several Areas Amid Heavy Rains

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Attanagalu Oya has reached major flood levels at Dunamale while Kelani, Ging, and Kalu Rivers have all reached minor flood levels, prompting alerts from the Department of Irrigation.

Minor flood levels are recorded in Kelani River from Nagalagamweediya, Hanwella, and Glencoes.

Similarly, Ging Ganga has reached minor flood levels in Baddegama, while Kuda Ganga, a tributary of Kalu Ganga, has also hit minor flood levels in the Millakanda area. 

Kalu Ganga is at risk level in Ratnapura, Putupaula, and Magura.

Residents in low-lying areas are advised to exercise caution.

In response to the rising water levels, temporary flood control measures, including placing sandbag, were implemented at various points along the Kelani Ganga with assistance from the armed forces.

The Disaster Management Center has reported that many roads have been inundated and numerous houses have been affected.

As a result, 100 individuals from 24 families have been provided shelter. 

Overall, 22,064 people have been impacted by the heavy rains and floods.

Landslide warnings have been issued for nine districts, with the National Building Research Organization urging residents in those areas to remain vigilant. 

Senior geologist Wasantha Senadheera emphasized the need for caution.

The Department of Meteorology predicts continued rainfall due to unstable atmospheric conditions, with over 100 millimeters expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts. 

Residents are also advised to be cautious of lightning strikes.

From 8:30 pm last night to 2:30 am this morning, the highest rainfall recorded was in Eheliyagoda, totaling 117 millimeters, followed closely by 114 millimeters at Halvatura estate in Kalutara and 105.5 millimeters in Hanwella.
