New Leadership for Excise & Registration Departments

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of M.S.P. Sooriyapperuma as the Acting Commissioner General of Registration of Persons. 



This position has been vacant since September 24, 2024. 



Sooriyapperuma, a special grade officer of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, is currently serving as an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Public Security.



In another significant move, the Cabinet has also approved the dismissal of J.M. Gunasiri from his position as Commissioner General of Excise. 



This decision was made by the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Policy Formulation, Planning, and Tourism. Gunasiri's contract was terminated with immediate effect. 



U.D.N. Jayaweera, a special grade officer of the Inland Revenue Service and currently an Additional Secretary (Agency Coordination II) at the President's Secretariat, has been appointed as the new Commissioner General of Excise. 



"The Sri Lanka Excise Department is the main revenue collection agency of the government and the efficiency and the good governance of this Department directly affects the revenue of the government. The said department should be given leadership that can achieve future challenges and goals while maintaining the progress of fulfillment of the revenue targets of the department," added a statement from the Department of Government Information.
