Sri Lankan Farmers Grapple with Floodwaters Ravaging Paddy Fields

COLOMBO (News 1st); Heavy rains blanketing Sri Lanka have unleashed floodwaters, inundating vast swathes of paddy fields in the Palliya Godella area within the Midrigiriya Divisional Secretariat. 

Farmers report thousands of acres of Maha-season cultivated fields submerged, raising fears of significant crop losses and financial hardship.

The recent deluge coincides with the opening of floodgates from major reservoirs like Parakrama Samudraya, Kaudulla, Minneriya, and Moragahakanda. 

The cascading spillage, entering the Mahaweli River, has exacerbated the flooding, leaving farmers in a desperate state.

Adding to the farmers' distress is the lack of immediate support. They are demanding fair compensation for the devastating impact of the floods on their crops. 

Many fear the financial burden will be crippling, impacting not only their immediate needs but also their ability to prepare for future harvests.
