COLOMBO (News 1st);  In a phone call today, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry urged the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Myanmar, U Than Swe, to intervene and secure the immediate release of 56 Sri Lankan nationals trafficked and held in Myawaddy.

This marks the latest effort by the Sri Lankan government to secure the well-being and repatriation of its citizens caught in a human trafficking ring operating in Myanmar.

Minister Sabry had previously raised the issue with his counterpart on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Foreign Minister's Retreat in Bangkok.

During the call, Minister Sabry emphasized the urgency of the situation and requested the Myanmar government's full cooperation in ensuring the safety and well-being of the detained Sri Lankans. He stressed the need for swift action to facilitate their repatriation.

The Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Myanmar are actively working with the Myanmar authorities to resolve this situation.
