COLOMBO (News 1st); For generations, the villages of Kantale have thrived on the production and sale of curd, a staple in Sri Lankan cuisine. However, this time-honored industry is facing an uphill battle in the face of rising commodity prices and production costs.

Over 700 families in the region rely on curd making as their primary source of income. While previous years saw them comfortably sustaining themselves, the recent economic climate has painted a bleaker picture.

Villagers report significant difficulties in maintaining the industry. Among the key challenges, the sharp rise in the price of liquified milk, a crucial ingredient, has squeezed their profit margins.

Additionally, the scarcity and increasing cost of traditional clay pots, essential for curd maturation, further burden their operations.

Beyond the immediate issues, villagers express a broader concern for the future of their industry. They urge the authorities to take necessary steps to support their livelihood.

Increased access to affordable liquified milk and clay pots, along with potential investments in modernizing production techniques, are among the solutions they highlight.
