EC To Announce Local Government Poll Date Soon

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Election Commission has announced its commitment to setting a date for the local government elections as soon as possible. 

The commission assured the public that it will seek support from government institutions to fulfill its legal responsibilities regarding the conduct of these elections, in accordance with the Supreme Court's decision.

On the 22nd, the Supreme Court ruled that the President, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, violated the fundamental rights of the people by failing to hold the 2023 Local Government Election through arbitrary and unlawful actions. 

The court criticized the Election Commission for not properly planning and managing the election process and for failing to issue necessary instructions to secure the cooperation of other government agencies.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to hold the elections at the earliest possible time, with the support of other government institutions, in accordance with its assigned powers.
