Man Arrested With 650 Smuggled Mobile Phones

COLOMBO (News 1st); In a joint operation, the Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Police arrested a suspect in possession of 650 mobile phones suspected to have been smuggled into the country.



The arrest took place at a roadblock in the Karamba area of Puttalam on August 27, 2024.



The operation was carried out by naval personnel from SLNS Thambapanni in the Northwestern Naval Command, in collaboration with the Norochcholai Police. 



Acting on received information, the team conducted a search at the Karamba roadblock, where they discovered the mobile phones being transported in a cab.



The suspect, a 52-year-old resident of Kekirawa, was taken into custody along with the mobile phones and the cab. The devices are believed to have been illegally brought into Sri Lanka, violating customs regulations.



The suspect, along with the seized mobile phones and the cab, has been handed over to the Norochcholai Police for further legal action.
