Ex-Sri Lankan Soldiers Are PoWs In Ukraine

COLOMBO (News 1st); Five retired Sri Lankan army soldiers who joined the conflict in Russia have been captured by Ukrainian security forces and are now prisoners of war.

The Ministry of Defense announced that the Government of Ukraine has officially informed the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, about the capture.

The soldiers' relatives have also been notified by the embassy.

The soldiers were apprehended after crossing into Ukraine from the Russian border.

Preliminary negotiations for their release have already begun, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs actively involved in discussions.

Recently, reports have surfaced about human trafficking operations that send retired Sri Lankan soldiers to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war.
