COLOMBO (News1st); Provincial Governors have informed that the Attorney General's advice was sought regarding the appointment of former local government representatives to supervise development activities of local government institutions.

The Election Commission said the Governors of the Central and Western Provinces informed the Commission in writing that action will be taken regarding the appointments based on the Attorney General's advice.

The Election Commission pointed out on several occasions that the appointments are illegal, as the local government election law is currently in effect although the local government elections were postponed.

Accordingly, the Governors of the Southern and Eastern Provinces canceled the relevant appointments.

The Election Commission issued directives in this regard to the Governors after considering complaints made recently by several parties including election monitors, that former local government representatives and candidates who submitted nominations for the local government election were given appointments to supervise development activities of local government institutions.
