COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka Customs is grappling with significant challenges that have led to delays in clearing goods.

According to Customs Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda, a shortage of officers, coupled with inadequate facilities, has hampered the department’s efficiency.

Sri Lanka Customs is currently operating with a 30% staff deficiency, which has directly impacted its capacity to process goods swiftly.

Meanwhile, in an effort to mitigate the resulting congestion at the ports, Customs has implemented a 70% reduction in container inspections.

The Spokesperson also highlighted the shortage of equipment to carry out the necessary security checks of containers and the lack of space to accommodate the current procedure.
