Heavy showers above 100mm expected in several areas

COLOMBO (News1st); The Department of Meteorology predicted showers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, with heavy showers above 100mm in the Western and Sabaragamuwa province and in the Nuwara-Eliya district.

The Met. Department predicted showers or thundershowers in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts in the evening or night.

The Department also predicted strong winds of about 50-60kmph over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, Western, Southern and North-Western provinces and in the Trincomalee and Monaragala districts.

The Met. Department said the effects of cyclone 'Remal' will dissipate after Thursday (30).

Director of the Department of Meteorology Ajith Wijemanna said the cyclone made landfall in Bangladesh.

He said accordingly heavy showers are expected to gradually decrease from Thursday (30).

Wijemanna said however the prevailing showery and windy conditions are expected to continue further in the South Western parts of the island, due to the effects of the South West Monsoon season.

The Department of Irrigation said the Kalu, Gin, Nilwala rivers and the Attanagalu Oya is still at minor flood level.

The Department requested those living in affected areas to remain vigilant in this regard.

39,156 people belonging to 10,483 families have been affected due to the adverse weather conditions.

Landslide warnings issued to several divisional secretariats in eight districts continue to remain in effect.

Landslide warnings are in effect in the Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts.
