COLOMBO (News 1st); The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to commence Advanced Level (A/L) education immediately after the completion of the GCE Ordinary Level examination.
The Department of Government Information in a statement detailing cabinet decisions noted that the Department of Examination currently takes at least three months to release O/L examination results.
During this waiting period, students experience a deviation from regular school education, impacting their motivation to pursue A/L studies.
It also added that social issues arise due to this prolonged gap between exams and result announcements.
Recognizing the need for timely educational transitions, the proposal suggests starting A/L classes right after the conclusion of the O/L examination.
This change is set to take effect in the year 2024.
It added that immediate transition to A/L stream sallows better planning and utilization of study time, and that teachers will have sufficient time to teach the A/L curriculum.
The Cabinet of Ministers thus, approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Education.
Students appearing for the G.C.E. O/L examination in May 2024 will be the first beneficiaries of this new approach.
