Several roads closed due to May Day rallies and demonstrations

COLOMBO (News1st); Sri Lanka Police said a special security and traffic plan is in place due to the May Day rallies and demonstrations.

9,000 Police officers have been deployed for this purpose.

Police Spokesman DIG Attorney Nihal Thalduwa said Pradeepa Mawatha, the road leading from Sangharaja Roundabout to Samantha Junction along Baseline Road, will be closed from Jayantha Weerasekera Junction.

He added accordingly the road opposite the PD Sirisena Ground will be closed.

DIG Thalduwa said Lower Chatham Street, the stretch from York Street to Olcott Mawatha, and the section opposite the old post office will be closed in Colombo Fort.

He said a May Day rally is due to commence from Gunasinhapura and head to Lower Chatham Street via Olcott Mawatha, and the road will be closed during that period, after 12PM on Wednesday (01).

DIG Nihal Thalduwa said one lane of C.W.W. Kannangara Mawatha will also be closed, from Horton Place Roundabout to F.R. Senanayake Junction.

He added that the lane closer to Viharamahadevi Park will accordingly be closed.

The Police Spokesman said Havelock Road, Thummulla Roundabout, and several surrounding roads will also be closed, as a May Day rally is due to be held at the BRC Grounds.

He urged the public to refrain from going to these areas, unless for essential purposes.
