MAPPED: Major Political Parties To Mark May Day In Colombo; Police Announce Areas To Avoid

COLOMBO (News 1st): Prominent political parties and groups are gearing up for May Day celebrations in Colombo, as well as several other key cities across the country.

In an official statement, the Sri Lanka Police announced that special traffic arrangements will be implemented on May 1, 2024. Commuters are strongly advised to avoid areas where rallies and processions are scheduled, unless it is absolutely necessary.

UNP : 

The United National Party will mark May Day opposite the P. D. Sirisena Grounds.

Accordingly, entry to Pradeepa Mawatha from Sangharaja Mawatha, entry to Pradeepa Mawatha From Jumma Masjid Junction, and entry to Pradeepa Mawatha from all by-roads between Sangharaja Mawatha and Jumma Masjid Junction will NOT be permitted.

 

SLPP: The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna will have their May Day Rally at Campbell Park in Borella. Roads in the area will NOT be closed, said Sri Lanka Police.

 

SJB: The Samagi Jana Balavegaya will conduct a May Day Rally in Chatham Street, Fort. 

The section of the road from York Street to C. T. O. Junction will remain closed.

 

NPP: The National People's Power will stage its May Day rally along Kannangara Mawatha, Colombo.

The process will travel along Havelock Road, Thummulla, Reid Avenue, Independence Round-about, Nanda Motors Junctions, Horton Round-about, Kannangama Mawatha, F. R. Senanayake Mawatha and will return to the site of the rally.

During this time F. R. Senanayake Mawatha, Dharmapala Round-about, Zoysa Round-about, and Horton Round-about will be closed for traffic.,
